Quote: Toledo-made Jeep Libertys recaptured the nation's compact sport-utility vehicle crown from the Ford Escape last year after sales surged 38 percent in December.
Both the Liberty and Toledo-made Jeep Wrangler posted sales gains nationwide last month compared to the year before, even though DaimlerChrysler AG's U.S. brands had a 5 percent slide in December. Liberty set a sales record for the month.
For the year, though, Liberty's U.S. sales fell less than 1 percent to 166,883, while Wrangler sales were up 2 percent to 79,017. The results helped boost Chrysler's sales for the year to 2.3 million vehicles.
